Hybrid Organs

Clarity is especially excited to be offering consultation and design services for digital hybrid organs as there are many traditional pipe organs in NZ that can not be repaired due to incredibly high costs. The option to turn them into a hybrid in essence saves the instrument from demolition, giving it a new lease of life for many more years to come.

A hybrid organ unites a new or existing pipe organ with a digital organ in a brilliant partnership enjoyed by thousands of houses of worship worldwide. The marriage of acoustic winded pipes with state-of-the-art digital sound transforms aging or limited pipe organs into instruments of great beauty and flexibility. Case study : Nelson Boys College Pipe/digital hybrid Organ.

For over 11 years Clarity Director Mark has been assisting with Nelson Boys College pipe organ, which has now been transformed into a pipe digital hybrid, in 2022.

At the end of 2021 the pipe organ was vandalised, and all the antiquated electromechanical action was damaged and needed to be replaced. In conjunction with Keyboard Music Systems, Clarity provided an option not just to repair but to rejuvenate the organ into the latest modern digital hybrid, Makin Thirlmere. The 1950’s pipes provide the sound in addition to new digital stops and sounds, resulting in reliable playability and enhanced features.

Nelson Cathedral Organist, Paul Chan, was the first to play the new console and was impressed by how the digital sound was so pipe-like, to the point of not being sure which was which!

Case study : St Paul’s Presbyterian, digital organ, Oamaru.

A Johannus T370 digital organ was installed at St Paul’s in 2021, as their previous 30-year-old instrument literally blew up! This is a sizable three keyboard and pedals instrument with traditional pipe organ and orchestral sounds, such as trumpet, piano, harpsichord, chimes and strings. The congregation are thrilled with how the sound fills the space and the organists, with the special features.

Clarity's organ specialist

Clarity Director, Mark Patterson, has enjoyed a life long love affair with the pipe organ, digital and now the new hybrid organs also! Mark began playing the pipe organ from six years of age and from age 11 to 17 he built a full pipe organ in his home! At 12 he was awarded a music scholarship to Christs College Canterbury where he later became the organ scholar at Christchurch Cathedral.

As an adult who has toured nationally and played for many years in many church venues Mark has got up close and personal with the workings of the organ. This has been though working with the south island organ company over many years on organ repairs, tuning and more. Due to Mark's specialist skills he was recently tasked with his most unusual project to date - bringing down the remnants of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrement's 1878 organ, which was damaged during the earthquakes.

Mark is now able to combine his intimate knowledge of the instrument as a player and technician, and his niche understanding of church acoustics, to lead his team in providing his customers with the expertise they need to make the right choice in purchasing their organ solution.

Let us help choose the right instrument for you!

Rodgers Organs
Rodgers continues to push the art of organ building with the goal of faithfully delivering the emotionally and spiritually lifting experience of the American pipe organ sound to a new generation of performers and audiences around the world.

Every member of our team brings an expert level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and devotion to faithfully creating a true American pipe organ sound that is beyond expectation. Rodgers aims to build the finest digital organs available, for any setting, each and every day.

Hybrid organs offer a far greater selection and diversity of sound than most acoustic-only instruments, with enormous savings in the cost of purchase and maintenance. With a Rodgers console and Rodgers Pipe Integration Manager (PIM) system, new pipes can be added, or existing pipes can be preserved or enhanced while perfectly matching the ranks using Rodgers’ digital tonal finishing and auto-tuning technologies.

As a result, Rodgers digital organ sounds are virtually indistinguishable from the sounds coming from winded pipes. An ideal solution for churches with an aging or limited pipe instrument, but also for churches looking to get the most out of their organ.

Johannus Organs

Johannus is located in a unique neo-classical building in Ede, in the heart of Holland. An inspiring environment where enthusiastic designers, musicians and audio-technical specialists work together in developing and building the beautiful Johannus organs.

Whether you are looking for a small choir organ or a church organ with enough power to accompany congregational singing, Johannus has the perfect organ for any church or concert setting, with a surprising number of possibilities.

When you buy a Johannus organ, you can be sure of a superior quality instrument in your church’s style.
Johannus also specialise in home organs and hybrid organs.

Makin Organs

Through the years from our origins with the John Compton organ business, Makin has always strived to deliver the best in terms of both sound and leading-edge technology to a very discerning audience of organists, schooled in the English style of organ building.

This great tradition continues today with our Custom range of instruments. Designed and built by organists for organists, these instruments are at the pinnacle of the pipeless organ world with a sound and build quality that simply can’t be beaten, yet at a price that is affordable.

We never compromise on sound so rather like a pipe organ, which has a separate pipe for every note, we have a separate ‘sample’ for every single note of every single stop. This is why Makin organs are so authentic and indeed so sort after.

Copeman Hart

Copeman Hart is compared to highly desirable and exclusive cars by organ enthusiasts: the organs are custom built down to the very last note. Whether it concerns the stoplist, the layout of the drawstops, the position of the thumb pistons, the style and colour of the console: each detail is decided upon in consultation with the customer.

The organ is constructed using only the best materials. Each Copeman Hart is built in the old English tradition, which can be seen in items such as the high quality motorised drawstops originating from the pipe organ world. Almost anything is possible within the English tradition, and it is for this reason that most organ enthusiasts have a relationship of many years’ standing with this brand.

For the larger parish church, a three manual organ is perhaps the answer to parish needs. Not only will it prove to be an excellent ‘hymn machine’ but will also provide a skilful organist with a tremendous palette of sound to work with. The instrument at St Mary's Parish Church, Barnard Castle, with 57 speaking stops is an excellent example.
